The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields in order to acknowledge their contributions towards the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and regions. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the recipients’ activities.
“The Hong Kong Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry” was established for the purpose of protecting the business and interests of Japanese companies (Japanese subsidiaries here), and this year marks the 50th anniversary. They provide and share local business and political information to member companies through meetings and lectures in different sectors. In addition, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Japan in Hong Kong, they work to strengthen relations with the Hong Kong government, local economic organizations, and chambers of commerce in other countries. After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, they conducted a fund-raising activity in cooperation with the Hong Kong Japanese Club. The chamber’s president has helped fund the “Japanese Autumn Festival in Hong Kong”, which has been held since 2016, and coordinated the participation of the festival’s private sectors as executive chairperson. The Chamber of Commerce & Industry has made a significant contribution towards promoting the relationship between Japan and Hong Kong.
“The Hong Kong Japanese Club” was established in 1955 for the purpose of providing welfare benefits for Japanese people living in Hong Kong and contributing to the local community of Hong Kong. The Japanese Club continually cooperates with the Japanese Consulate General in Hong Kong to create an environment where Japanese food, Go and Shogi equipment can be provided for Japanese people living in Hong Kong, and contributes to the local community through organizing charity music festivals, golf tournaments, etc.. The Japanese club has played an important role as a place of relaxation for Japanese people living in Hong Kong and as the core institution of the Japanese community. With regard to the establishment of the Hong Kong Japanese School, which was established in 1966, it also organized the Preparatory Committee, which collected approximately $ 300,000 donations. After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, it conducted a fund-raising activity in cooperation with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
The Hong Kong Japan Club has made a significant contribution to promoting the relationship between Japan and Hong Kong.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendation Award Ceremony for two groups will be held later in Hong Kong.
