On 21st May 2019, the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the Reiwa 1 Spring Imperial Decorations. Ms. LEUNG Onyuk, President of the Society of Japanese Language Education Hong Kong, has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in recognition of her remarkable contribution towards the development of Japanese language education in the People's Republic of China (Hong Kong SAR).

Ms. LEUNG Onyuk became the Vice-president of the Society of Japanese Language Education Hong Kong in 2000, and has been contributing to the development of the society, including obtaining its recognition as a Specified Non-profit Organization. After taking up the post as President in 2009, Ms. LEUNG has served to promote Japanese language education among young people, and her efforts are particularly evident in the establishment of the first scholarship scheme ever in Hong Kong which targets high school and associate degree students, as well as the setting up of the Japanese Studies group project award, etc.
Besides, as a tertiary educator, Ms. LEUNG has also contributed hugely to the spread and popularization of the Japanese language and Japanese studies, through devoting herself to instructing students as a teacher of Japanese language and Japanese culture when the Department of Japanese Studies at the University of Hong Kong was newly established in 1985.
