New year greetings by Ambassador Wada

              Happy new year!

2020 was a year in which the world was severely affected by the outbreak of COVID-19. The movement of people was restricted, while social and cultural activities, as well as economic and trade exchanges, faced enormous challenges. In particular, we have heard many people of Hong Kong and Macau express their longing to “travel to Japan as soon as possible", and we really appreciate everyone’s love for Japan.

In order to provide opportunities for the people of Hong Kong and Macau to at least enjoy and experience Japan in this difficult situation, the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong has tried to implement various online projects adapted to the current times. In addition to the large number of participants from Hong Kong and Macau, we have also been able to attract new participants from different parts of the world and people who have not been able to participate in the events on site before.

COVID-19 has given us many new "insights". One can say that COVID-19 has given us the opportunity to rethink and examine again what we have so far taken for granted in our daily family life, work, and also our way of living and the ideal state of human society. I believe that we need to use this valuable experience as a springboard for introducing new styles into our lives and society.

2021 is the Year of the Ox.

The ox has long been known for its persistence in helping human beings with agricultural work. In particular, the “Year of the Ox” is said to be a year of great hope after enduring hard times. It is hoped that, in accordance with this prediction, this year will be a year of great hope after enduring so much hardship. The Consulate-General of Japan would also like to steadily exert its efforts in further promoting the relations between Japan and Hong Kong/Macau, step by step like an ox.

In addition, the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games are scheduled to be held this year, and I hope this will lonboost the atmosphere as well as everyone’s spirit. Also, March 11 marks the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the people of Hong Kong and Macau for your warm and generous support since the disaster occurred.

At the start of this new year, I sincerely hope that the COVID-19 situation will be brought under control as soon as possible, and that 2021 will be a good year for the people of Hong Kong and Macau, turning a new page for the relations between Japan and the two territories.

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous Lunar New Year! Gong Hei Fat Choy!
