Amb Miura
Greeting from Ambassador MIURA, Consul-General

I am MIURA Jun and I have been appointed as the Consul-General (Ambassador) at the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong and Macao. Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1992, I have served in Moscow, New York (Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations), and spent nearly three years as Political Minister in the United Kingdom, a country which has close ties with Hong Kong. This is my first overseas assignment in Asia, let alone Hong Kong. I am eager to fully immerse myself and learn as much as I can. Your guidance and support would be greatly appreciated.

The Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong was established in 1873, Meiji 6, and has a history of around 150 years. I am aware that there are over 20,000 Japanese nationals residing in Hong Kong and Macao. It is a great honour for me to serve as Consul-General in Hong Kong, an extremely important partner for Japan, with close economic ties and people-to-people exchanges.

A new Chief Executive will be inaugurated in Macao this month. I hope to visit Macao as much as possible to understand the SAR and engage with its people.

As Consul-General of Japan, one of my most important tasks is the provision of consular services, especially to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals residing in Hong Kong and Macao. We are committed to providing accurate information and doing our utmost to ensure that Japanese nationals can live here with peace of mind.

Furthermore, the Consulate-General of Japan will work closely with Japanese businesses to ensure that they can conduct their operations in an appropriate environment. We will also collaborate with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Hong Kong and JETRO Hong Kong and, by actively engaging with the Hong Kong and Macao Governments, strive to contribute to our fullest extent.

Recently, there has been an increase in direct flights connecting Hong Kong and regional airports in Japan, strengthening the ties between various regions of Japan and Hong Kong. I will actively support initiatives from Japanese prefectural governments to promote the attractiveness of different regions of Japan to the people of Hong Kong and Macao, encouraging them to visit and experience these places.

I recognise that cultural exchange plays an important role in deepening the understanding of Japan and I am grateful to hear that many people in Hong Kong are engaged in activities related to Japanese culture. I hope to collaborate with them in order to convey the wonderful aspects of Japanese culture to more people.
The work of the Consulate-General serves as a bridge, connecting people. My team and I will strive to contribute to the development of Japan-Hong Kong and Japan-Macao relations, whilst deepening our cooperation with Japanese government agencies and prefectural governments, various organisations and companies, as a platform for all of Japan.

The year 2025 marks the opening of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. I will support your activities in various fields to further enhance the exchanges between Japan and Hong Kong/Macao, thereby strengthening relations between Japan and both SARs. Your suggestions and requests are important to us, so please feel free to contact us at any time.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during my tenure. I would be most grateful for your forthcoming support.
December 2024
Ambassador Jun Miura
