The Foreign Minister’s Commendation presentation ceremony for Ms Sally WONG, the former Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo) and former Chairman of the Japan Society of Hong Kong, was held on 8th October 2024 and the award was presented by Ambassador Kenichi OKADA, Consul-General of Japan in Hong Kong.
The Foreign Minister's Commendation is awarded to individuals and groups that have made outstanding achievements in the promotion of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and other countries and areas, as well as in the development of the external economy.
After joining the Hong Kong Government in 1981 as an Administrative Officer, Ms WONG worked in various government departments before serving as the Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo) from 2011 to 2016, where she was instrumental in promoting exchanges between Japan and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo), which Ms WONG belonged to, is an organisation primarily responsible for promoting Hong Kong's economic and trade interests in Japan and enhancing a wider understanding of Hong Kong.
Later, in 2016, Ms WONG joined the Japan Society of Hong Kong and supported various Japan-related events. The Society is a non-profit organisation that runs Japanese-language courses and organises cultural activities, which aims to deepen mutual understanding between Hong Kong and Japan and to raise the Hong Kong public’s awareness and interest in the cultural achievements of Japan in the fields of art, literature, philosophy, science, history, language, industry, life, society and the economy. In 2017, Ms WONG became the Society’s Vice-Chairman and, furthermore, as the Chairman from 2020 to 2023, she took responsibility for running the Society, responsibly accomplished the management of the Society by way of various ideas and tireless efforts while facing the eruption of numerous difficult problems under the COVID-19 pandemic.
In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Ms WONG has been awarded the Foreign Minister's Commendation.
