The JAPAN eVISA (Electronic Visa)
 
Foreign nationals, other than the national or citizens of the countries & territories with visa exemption, are eligible to apply for an electronic visa (hereinafter referred to as a “eVISA”) for a single entry temporary visit, for the purposes of tourism, from March 1st 2024.
 
An outline of the procedure for an eVISA application
(1) Applicants submit their eVISA applications via the Japan Visa Application Centre website. 
(2) A “Visa Issuance Notice” (eVISA) will be issued to successful applicants. 
(3) Applicants collect their eVISA via the Japan Visa Application Centre website. 
(4) Travellers holding an eVISA are required to display the “Visa Issuance Notice” on a mobile device that is CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET (i.e., smartphone, tablet, or other INTERNET CONNECTED devices). The “Visa Issuance Notice” may be requested at any time during travel to and entry into Japan by Immigration Department, airport or airline staff etc. Please ensure that you are able to access the Notice when required. PDF data, screenshots and printed copies of the page will NOT be accepted for travel.  
Eligible Applicants

   >Applicants are eligible to apply an eVISA if he / she fulfils the following:
  1. Applicants who plan to stay in Japan for less than 90 days (short-term) for the purposes of tourism.
  2. Applicants who apply for a Single Entry Temporary Visitor Visa.
  3. Applicants who are Hong Kong or Macau residents and are currently residing in Hong Kong or Macau.
  4. Applicants whose nationality is other than that of nationals or citizens of countries & territories with visa exemptions, excluding nationals of Brunei, Qatar, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.
  5. Applicants who are holding an ordinary passport.
  6. Applicants who travel to Japan by plane.
  7. The earliest date of submission for an eVISA application is 3 months before the intended date of arrival in Japan. However, applications with an intended date of arrival in Japan which is less than 2 weeks from the submission date will not be accepted.  

(Note)In the following cases, applicants are not eligible to apply for an eVISA. Please submit a visa application to the Japan Visa Application Centre or through the Accredited Agencies in person.
  a. Applicants who have been convicted of a crime or offence or have been deported from any country.
  b. Applicants who are dual nationals of Japan and another country.
  c. Applicants who apply for a Multiple Entry Temporary Visitor Visa.
  d. Applicants who travel to Japan by ship. (※ excluding international scheduled passenger ferries between Japan and Busan or Shanghai)
  e. The purpose of the visit is not tourism.
  f.  Applicants who have previously been rejected for any Japan visa.
